Serie was born in the Mythical Era, survived the terrifying scenes of that era, and has lived to the present day. Over a thousand years before the main story begins, Serie met Flamme, who had lost her parents. On a "whim," she taught her magic and raised the young Flamme to adulthood. One day, Flamme, who had already completed her training, brought her apprentice Frieren to meet Serie. Serie did not think highly of Frieren, believing she lacked ambition because she valued the process of learning magic. Flamme, however, stated that it is exactly such a mage who can defeat theDemon King, ushering in an era of peace, whereas the battle-hungry Serie cannot. After Flamme's death, Frieren visited Serie with her master's last will. Serie saw the great work Flamme had accomplished and her request for Serie to "take over the work related to human magic." She immediately tore up the will, claiming she disliked reading things that looked like reportsBut didn't you just finish reading it?, and said that Flamme was never able to understand her until the day she died.(Big Lie). Frieren told Serie that Flamme had already anticipated these actions, and then prepared to leave; a pensive Serie then invited Frieren to take a walk together. Serie told Frieren about Flamme's dream since she was a young girl—that "everyone could learn magic"—and remarked that Flamme had realized this impractical dream in a span of time that was almost nothing compared to her own. Serie pointed out that humans are creatures who hurry because they fear their end is near, prophesied the arrival of the era of humans, and warned Frieren not to be too lazy. Serie, around the time the HeroHimmeldefeated the Demon King, about thirty years later, became active again to seek mages capable of fighting the Demon King's army in this peaceful era, and founded the Continental Magic Association. Serie promised to teach the most outstanding mages one spell, using this privilege to attract mages to join the Continental Magic Association. Upon learning thatMacht of El DoradoMacht had turned the entire fortress city of Weise into gold, Serie immediately led the newly formed Continental Magic Association to Weise, and ambushed him from behind before he could notice, forcing him to undo the gold-transformation of Weise. Upon discovering that he could not do so because he did not understand humans, she prepared to kill Macht, but was stopped by several of her disciples who burst into Weise. They pointed out that if Macht were killed, Weise would never return to its original state, thus persuading Serie to accept their proposal to "seal Macht along with Weise."During this battle, Serie neutralized Macht's specialty, the magic to turn all things into gold, leaving him with a massive psychological trauma.
Frieren and Fern went to the magic city of Äußerst to take the First-Class Mage Exam. Serie also began to pay attention to her grand-disciple's movements, and felt quitePleasure。 After the second stage of the First-Class Mage Exam ended, Serie felt that too many candidates had passed and was somewhat angry with the examiner, Sense. Serie claimed it was all Frieren's fault, so she decided on the spot to change the third stage to an interview conducted by herself. She praised the former examiner, Lernen, for discovering Frieren's true strength, and expressed regret that despite having such power, he had failed to do anything that would leave his name in history. Before leaving, she threw out another line: "I really shouldn't have trained human disciples," which immediately caused the old man, who had served Serie for half a century, to challenge Frieren in a fit of passion. Serie used her precise intuition to select candidates qualified to become First-Class Mages. She first disqualified five candidates who were intimidated by her massive mana, and then declared Frieren a failure after finding that she was still at odds with her even after a thousand years. Serie doubted that a mage with her personality could defeat the Demon King, but was told by Frieren that it was precisely the "magic to create a field of flowers"—which Serie considered boring—that allowed Frieren to meet the important companions who defeated the Demon King. Frieren pointed out that Fern would be a mage Serie would like and told her that the era of humans had arrived. Before leaving, she asked Serie why she decorated the exam venue with the flower field magic she found boring; having been seen through, Serie admitted to her that she could not forget these disciples she had trained on a whim. Serie saw that Fern noticed she was restricting her mana, something even Lernen had not discovered. She was greatly excited and invited Fern to be her disciple, but was immediately rejected. Serie understood that this was the result of Frieren's calculation, but still unwilling to give up on this exceptionally talented mage, she declared Fern passed. Then Fern requested "magic that cleans clothes" as her privilege. After Fern, the remaining five candidates were all recognized by Serie, who also apologized to Zanze after the exam, admitting that this year was indeed full of talent. At the privilege granting ceremony, Serie, despite Zanze's attempts to dissuade her, followed through on her promise and gave the Curse Reflection Magic to the newly promoted First-Class MageDenken, while also seeing through his After this, she was constantly patted on the head by the newly promoted First-Class Mage Methode, until she finally lost her patience and ordered that she could only be patted for ten minutes a day.
Serie assigned First-Class MageGenauand a partner to the Lufen region of the Northern Plateau to subjugate demons, but they were by a Demon GeneralRevolte of the Divine Skillsoundly defeated and forced to return, and Genau's partner also sacrificed themselves in this battle to protect children. Genau remarked that this mage who sacrificed themselves out of kindness was worthy of respect, but Serie said that the word kindness had nothing to do with Genau and hoped he would stay the way he was.In reality, Serie just didn't want Genau to die as well, and later even ordered him to shake hands with Methode. Serie then sent Genau and Methode on a subjugation mission together, and the two returned in triumph after completing the task in cooperation with Frieren's party. Then Serie returned to her life of being head-patted by Metode.
During the Empire's Foundation Day, Serie was invited to the Empire as a state guest to attend the Foundation Day banquet, where, under Denken's arrangement, she would meet with the Empire'sEmperorto sign a peace treaty, but her subordinate Linel brought intelligence that someone intended to assassinate Serie. Therefore, Serie gathered several top combatants from the Continental Magic Association, including Frieren's party, to go to the Imperial Capital for the Foundation Day. On the penultimate day of the Foundation Day, Serie used precognitive dream magic to converse with the Emperor in a dream about the current crisis. After establishing mutual trust, they began sharing intelligence, and she revealed that she saw herself, before the end of the ball on the final day of the Foundation Day, being by an unknown personDecapitationinstantly killed with an unknown future following it. Prior to this, multiple mages who had studied precognitive magic under her had died one after another. In the future she foresaw where she exerted all her strength to escape, countless members of the Continental Magic Association would be sacrificed instead—Serie viewed this as a threat from her opponent, leading her to judge that the opponent might also be using precognitive magic. As a Great Mage who has lived since the Age of Myth, Serie has accumulated an extremely massive amount of mana and has mastered almost all human magic.
As the most powerful Great Mage in the story, her voice actress Ise was also quite troubled about what kind of tone to use for her speech. After some discussion, it was decided that "since Serie is Flamme's master, their ways of speaking should be somewhat similar," so she ultimately adopted a direction close to Flamme's (or rather, imitating her voice actress, Ms. Atsuko Tanaka) for her performance.
