In the midst of the madness of the Cultural Revolution, astrophysicist Ye Wenjie joins Red Coast Base, a top secret Chinese military project to establish contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. Decades later, a spate of mysterious suicides among top scientists brings together naive nonmaterial[4] scientists Wang Miao and gruff, worldly police detective Shi Qiang.The pair's investigation leads them into contemporary science and ancient history, old crimes and new conspiracies. But all signs point to Ye Wenjie and Three Body, a compelling, strange online game, as somehow involved.
As Wang and Shi travel deeper into the maze of false clues and true revelations, the alien world light-years away and the darkness hidden within the human heart are brought closer and closer, culminating in a stunning conclusion.
