However, using the magical energy stored in a jewel causes the jewel container to shatter, so she, who has the look of someone destined for poverty, is reluctant to use them too much.
- Gandr
- Through her family crest, she can use Gandr without an incantation. Originally a curse that merely impairs one's health, when the magical concentration is high enough, it can cause direct physical damage, known as a "Finn Shot." - Trump Card Jewels
- Ten jewels prepared with seventeen years' worth of stored magical energy; she revealed that each one is worth seven figures. When used, each has power equivalent to an A-rank Great Magecraft. There are other jewels as well, but their stored magical energy is inferior to the aforementioned ten.
- She can use amethysts for reconnaissance to employ owls or kingfishers as familiars.
- In the Fate route, she used a topaz from the ten jewels on Saber. During the battle against Berserker in the forest, she used three to distract Berserker, five to deliver a fatal blow that destroyed his head and took one of his lives, and the last one on her own abdomen for defense.
- In the Unlimited Blade Works route, one was used on Berserker. During the battle at the church, seven were used in the fight against Caster. The final two were swallowed by the Holy Grail's black mud while being used for defense at Ryudou Temple.
- In the Heaven's Feel route, in order to obtain a replica of the Jeweled Sword, she infused the magical energy of all the jewels into the Azoth Sword and gave it to Shirou.

- "AZOTH" means mercury in alchemical terminology.

History
Before the Fifth Holy Grail War
The eldest daughter of Tokiomi Tohsaka, the head of the Tohsaka family—a mage lineage with a two-hundred-year history that manages the Fuyuki territory. Her mother is Aoi Zenjou, also a descendant of a mage family.
She is one-quarter Finnish. During the Third Holy Grail War, the Edelfelt sisters who participated had a falling out; as a result, the elder sister returned to Finland, while the younger sister remained in Fuyuki and married into the Tohsaka family, making Rin her granddaughter. Therefore, she is a distant cousin of Luvia, the current head of the Edelfelt family.
The magecraft of a magus family can only be inherited by one child, while the other children either have no contact with magecraft at all or are sent to other magus families as adopted children. Because the Matou family was ill-suited to the environment after arriving in Fuyuki, their bloodline gradually declined, and they could no longer produce an heir with Magic Circuits. Thus, they proposed to the Tohsaka family to take one of the two sisters as an adopted daughter. Tokiomi felt that in this way, Sakura would not have to stay away from the world of magecraft, and the Matou magecraft would also fall into the hands of the Tohsakas, which was a win-win outcome. Furthermore, Tokiomi anticipated that he might not return from participating in the Holy Grail War, so he sent Sakura to the Matou family, while Rin was raised as the heir to the Tohsaka family, learning Jewel Magecraft, the conversion of power, and the Tohsaka family motto of "Always remain elegant."As well as the special skill of dropping the ball and making blunders at critical moments.。
Before the Fourth Holy Grail War, Tokiomi sent his family out of Fuyuki City for their safety. Because her classmates were kidnapped by the Master-Servant pair of Ryuunosuke Uryuu and Caster, Rin later sneaked back into Fuyuki alone, destroyed Caster's mystic code, and rescued her classmates and the abducted children(This is an original plot point from the Fate/Zero anime; in the novel, Rin failed to save her classmates and suffered severe psychological trauma. Ufotable risked being criticized by Urobuchi fans just to fix Rin, truly a studio of Rin fans). Before departing, Tokiomi told Rin about the mission of the Fifth Holy Grail War.
During the Fourth Holy Grail War, Tokiomi Tohsaka was killed in actionwasKirei Kotominemurder, and her mother, Aoi Zenjou, was also strangled to the point of suffocation by Kariya Matou, resulting in disability, and passed away shortly thereafter. At 1:00 AM that night, Rin performed a Heroic Spirit summoning at her home without a catalyst. The following night, while Rin and Archer were investigating the school, they encountered another Servant who was also scouting the schoolLancer. After a brief skirmish between Archer and Lancer, Lancer spotteda witnessand broke off the fight to silence him. Rin and Archer arrived shortly after, finding him with only a breath of life left. She originally intended to give the poor soul a proper burial and look after his family, but when she turned his face over, she discovered it was an acquaintance of hers.

Rin took out the Tohsaka family's heirloom jewel pendant and used the magical energy within to revive the student who had been silenced, leaving the now-depleted pendant at the scene. After waking up, the revived student kept the pendant with him.
After Archer "returned" the pendant to Rin and told her that Lancer would not let a witness live, the Master and Servant followed Lancer to a Japanese-style residence, just as the seventh Master of the Holy Grail War—Shirou Emiyathrough a twist of fate, summoned the ServantSaberand repelled Lancer. Afterwards, depending on Shirou's choice, the story will enter the Fate route, the Unlimited Blade Works route, or the Heaven's Feel route.

Saber severely wounded the caught-off-guard Archer with a single strike, and in a panic, Rin used a Command Spell to recall Archer in spirit form. After Shirou told Saber not to attack Rin, Rin explained the basics of the Holy Grail War to Shirou and took him toKirei Kotomine's church.
After Shirou decided to participate in the Holy Grail War, the three of them emerged from the church, only to find another Master, Illyasviel von Einzbern, and her ServantBerserkerBerserker had already been waiting for a long time. Berserker suppressed Saber in battle with absolute strength advantage. After Shirou took a blow for Saber and was nearly cut in half, Illya lost interest and decided to leave. Afterwards, Rin and Saber sent the unconscious Shirou back to the Emiya residence and waited until he woke up, making a pact to join forces with him. Before leaving, she gave Saber a set of blue and white western clothes, which were originally items Kotomine would give her every year on her birthday. The 2006 anime version changed this part to the corresponding content of the UBW route.
On the seventh day, to protect Sakura, Rin reached an agreement with her: Sakura would not come to the Emiya residence for a week, and in exchange, Rin would move out after a week.
Shinji MatouHe began to contact Rin and Shirou separately at school and proposed an alliance, but was rejected by both, and in anger ordered his ServantRiderto activate the Blood Fort at school, eventually being repelled by Shirou and Saber. After dawn, Rin hid in the Einzbern forest while Shirou and Saber engaged Berserker in direct combat. Rin used her treasured gems in an ambush to kill one of Berserker's lives with a headshot, but failed to incapacitate him; instead, she was caught by Berserker and only survived thanks to a gem on her abdomen. At the critical moment, Shirou projected the Golden Sword of Promised Victory he had seen in his dreams and, together with Saber, killed seven of Berserker's lives to eliminate him. Illya, having lost her Servant, was taken home by Shirou.
Afterwards, while Shirou was in contact with Kotomine andGilgameshothers, Rin stayed at the Emiya residence to look after Illya. In the 2006 anime version,CasterCaster kidnapped Sakura to Ryudoji Temple and set up a dragnet; while Shirou, Saber, and Rin were confronting Caster, Caster was killed by the suddenly appearing Gilgamesh.
On the final day, Kotomine came to the house, kidnapped Illya, and seriously injured Rin. When Shirou returned home, he saw only Rin covered in blood. She fainted after handing the Azoth Sword to the returning Shirou.
Ultimately, Shirou defeated Kotomine, and Saber also defeated Gilgamesh and destroyed the Greater Grail, disappearing with the wind after confessing her love to Shirou. Shirou returned to his life before the Holy Grail War, while Rin went to study abroad at the Clock Tower in London, England, after graduation.
Unlimited Blade Works
Just as the name suggests, the UBW route is the home field for Rin and Archer.
When the two encountered Saber and Shirou, Shirou used a Command Spell to make Saber stop, after which the plot followed the same path as the Fate route. However, when facing Berserker, because Archer still retained his combat power, the fight was much easier than in the Fate route. Saber used a point-blank Strike Air to take one of Berserker's lives, and Archer used Broken Phantasm to kill another of Berserker's lives.In reality, he intended to use a weapon of mass destruction to kill Shirou, who was present, along with the enemy, so Illya decided to retreat.
After sending Shirou back to the Emiya residence, Rin stated that they would be enemies the next time they met. When Shirou arrived at school at dusk without Saber, showing no sense of danger, he was attacked by Rin, but they called a temporary truce due to the presence of a barrier and another Servant in the school.
After Rider was eliminated at school and Shinji fled, Rin and Shirou realized there was another Master in the school.
Shirou was abducted to Ryudou Temple by Caster's magecraft; Archer arrived to save him and drove Caster back, but slashed Shirou, severely wounding him, as he was preparing to leave. Upon learning of this, Rin used a Command Spell to order Archer not to harm Shirou or Saber.
Since Caster was lurking at Ryudou Temple, Rin first suspected Issei, who lived there. Caster kidnapped the one who had gone to the mountain behind Ryudou Temple toKiritsugu's,visit the grave, Fujimura-sensei. She set up a barrier to ambush the trio on their way home from an outing. Ultimately, Saber was taken by Caster using her Noble Phantasm, Rule Breaker. Caster went on to "eliminate" Kirei Kotomine at the church and made it her base of operations, attempting to tame Saber. Rin decided to break her alliance with the Saber-less Shirou and expel him from the Holy Grail War to protect him. Later, she stormed the church with Archer, but Archer defected on the spot; Rin was eventually released as part of a deal between Archer and Caster. After returning home, Rin discovered the issue of Shirou's pendant and Archer's pendant existing simultaneously, finally realizing Archer's true identity.
Having both lost their Servants, Shirou and Rin decided to seek help from Illya, but upon arrival, they only witnessed Berserker being killed by Gilgamesh and Illya dying after having her eyes slashed and her heart gouged out. After burying Illya, the two encountered Lancer, who was acting freely; out of his favor for Rin, Lancer decided to lend them a hand. After learning that Gilgamesh had used Shinji as the core of the Holy Grail, Rin and Shirou decided to storm Ryuudou Temple. In the True Ending "Brilliant Years," Saber disappears along with the destruction of the Holy Grail. Rin and Shirou confirm their relationship and head to the Clock Tower in London together after graduating high school. Due to their ill-fated connection with Luvia, they move into Luvia's apartment together. One day, the two travel to Glastonbury to say a final farewell to Saber. After returning to the Clock Tower, Shirou declines the invitation to join the Mages' Association and decides to travel the world to realize his ideals, while Rin remains at the Clock Tower, reuniting with Shirou three years later. Fate Material II states that as long as Rin is by Shirou's side, Shirou will not follow Archer's path.
In the Good Ending "Sunny Days," Saber remains in the world through Rin's magical energy, continuing to watch over Shirou and Rin's future while searching for her own answers in the world.
Heaven's Feel
The early progression is the same as the Fate route, but when Rin suggests teaming up with Shirou to fight Berserker, Shirou does not accept because he does not want to fight Illya.
Since Caster, who should have disappeared after losing her Master and being defeated, reappears and is controlled by Zouken, Shirou accepts the truce proposed by Rin.
Shinji Matou captures Sakura to coerce Shirou into fighting Rider at school, but Rin appears and drives Shinji back, pointing out that Sakura is Rider's true Master and also Rin's younger sister.

Ultimately, Rin and Shirou manage to rescue Illya and escape, but Shirou loses an arm, Berserker is swallowed by the black mud, and Archer is severely corrupted, transplanting his remaining left arm to Shirou to save his life.
When Sakura is violated by Shinji, the dark emotions in her heart explode. She completely blackens, goes berserk, and heads to the Emiya residence to take Illya. Rin tries to protect Illya but is heavily injured by the Shadow and must return to the Tohsaka residence for treatment. During this time, she finds the blueprint for the Jeweled Sword and has Shirou project the Jeweled Sword using the Azoth Dagger as a base. After Shirou and Kotomine work together to rescue Illya, the three collaborate to create the projected Jeweled Sword.
During the final battle in the Great Cavern beneath Ryuudou Temple, Rin uses the infinite magical energy provided by the Jeweled Sword to trade magical blasts with Dark Sakura, successfully suppressing her. However, she still cannot bring herself to deliver the killing blow and is injured by Sakura. After opening her heart and calling back Sakura's conscience, she loses consciousness and faints.
At this time, Shirou and Rider team up to defeat Saber Alter. Shirou projects Caster's Noble Phantasm, Rule Breaker, to sever the connection between Sakura and Avenger, and the two sisters are rescued by Rider.
