于7月5日的广播节目《SCHOOL OF LOCK!》中首次披露；7月25日开始在音乐配信网站先行配信。MV在8月19日播出的朝日电视台的《MUSIC STATION》节目内首次公开，同日也在youtube上公开。
由日本环球音乐旗下的EMI Records发行于2016年8月24日。
作为电影的先行配信主题曲，在Billboard JAPAN动画音乐排行榜“HOT Animation”中，连续8周获得第一位（累计17周），同时获得了2016年年榜第1位。“JAPAN HOT100”排行榜中，在上榜的第13周获得第1位。2016年9月，被日本唱片协会认证为配信白金歌曲（下载数25W）；10月被认证为配信双白金歌曲（下载数50W）；11月被认证为配信三白金歌曲（下载数75W）；2017年2月被认证为配信百万歌曲（下载数100W）[1]。
2017年2月27日，获得了第31届日本金唱片大奖配信BEST 5歌曲的奖项[2]。
2017年2月22日，发售了英文版专辑《君の名は。English edition》，其中收录了《前前前世》的英文版《Zenzenzense (English ver.)》。
RADWIMPS在第67回红白歌会上现场演唱了前前前世 original ver.，是下半场的第一首。
