After returning to Lungmen, she joined the Lungmen Guard Department almost immediately. No one knows her experiences before she entered the Royal Guard School, just as no one doubts her ability, her devotion to duty, and her hatred of evil. Regarding Ch'en's style of conduct, officers who have worked with the L.G.D. used to complain bitterly—she was too strict and too demanding. Early years Chen's biological mother was Wei Yenwu's sister and a princess of Yan, Yan Jing; her biological father was a high-ranking noble of Yan. After her mother's original husband, Edward Artorius, was killed by Wei Yenwu under Koschei's coercion, Wei Yenwu forced her to marry Chen's biological father to protect his sister. Consequently, Chen faced a predicament in her childhood where she was unloved by both parents. After her mother's death, Chen was raised by Wei Yenwu and taught swordsmanship, becoming close with her maternal half-sister, Talulah. On the day Koschei was exiled, Chen witnessed him abducting Talulah. Later, Chen studied military affairs in Victoria with excellent grades. After graduation, she returned to Lungmen and joined the Lungmen Guard Department, eventually rising to the position of Special Inspection Unit Superintendent. During a mission, Chen was infected with Oripathy following a bomb attack, but this was kept secret. The Grand Tutor outlined Yan's current situation with five beasts at the gates and the True Dragon's plan to perish with the Sui beast using the original Originium "Non-Return," warning Wei Yenwu to take the True Dragon's place after the use of "Non-Return," while Ch'en found two unknown voices echoing in her mind. After Wei Yenwu refused to explain his and the Grand Tutor's schemes, Ch'en rebuked him for his disregard for his own safety and went out for air, where she was again criticized by the two voices and saw a phantom of a certain building. Once Ch'en regained her senses, the Shadow Guard informed her that Wei Yenwu had disappeared from the guesthouse and was suspected to have headed for the Capital, so Ch'en immediately set off for the Capital to find him. Two days before the full moon, Ch'en sneaked into the city and dispersed the Word-Changs in front of the Sui agent Jun, making him remember her. At this moment, Chun, the Director of the Department of Sui Affairs and Jie's Candle-bearer—who once received Jie's favor but was manipulated by Sui's nightmares into facilitating Jie's death—slowly walked out. Chun demanded the token from Jieyuan from Zuo Le, but Zuo Le refused. When Ch'en questioned Chun's purpose in collaborating with the Grand Marshal to obtain the book-knife, Mo Yi provided the answer: to use the book-knife to edit the history of "Yanwu killing the monarch, Yanli ascending the throne," making Wei Yen-wu a temporary True Lung to sacrifice his life to activate "No Return" instead of the current True Lung, Yanli.
