The game takes place in a fantasy world called "Teyvat," where those chosen by the gods will be granted a "Vision" to channel elemental power. You will play as a mysterious character named the "Traveler," meeting companions with distinct personalities and unique abilities during your free travels, defeating powerful enemies together, and finding your lost kin—while gradually uncovering the truth of "Genshin Impact."[1]

In the distant past, people were granted the power to manipulate the elements through their faith in the gods, allowing them to build their homes in the wilderness.
Five hundred years ago, the collapse of an ancient kingdom caused the world to change...
Now, the disaster that swept across the continent has ceased, but peace has yet to arrive as expected.[3]

- Geo——Liyue Harbor
- A prosperous harbor located in the east of the continent of Teyvat.
Proudly standing foothills and stone forests, vast plains and lively riverbanks together form Liyue's rich landscape, which shines with colorful elegance under a climate of four distinct seasons. Amidst the wonders of the mountains and rocks, how many ancient gifts of the Geo Archon lie buried, waiting for people to discover?
- Electro——Inazuma City
- A closed archipelago located in the far east of the Teyvat continent.
Cross the endless thunderstorms and step onto the islands blessed by red maples and cherry blossoms. Amidst the surrounding sandbanks, towering cliffs and mysterious mountain forests, witness the eternity pursued by Her Excellency, the Almighty Narukami Ogosho.
- Dendro——Sumeru City
- The city of scholars located in the west-central part of the Teyvat continent.
A strange land possessing both lush rainforests and barren sands, where countless fruits of wisdom grow and are buried. Whether crossing the jungle to step onto the stairs of the city of scholars or delving deep into the desert to excavate the ruins of the red sands, travelers from afar can obtain precious knowledge here.

- A terrestrial sea located in the center of Teyvat.
Following the direction of the pure flowing water, crossing fields, deep forests, and seas of sand, what you will reach is the source of the continent's waters.
At the top of the waterfall, deep within the sea capital atop the plateau, unheard stories and long-forgotten legends yearn for travelers like a lost kingdom sunken beneath the water.

- The nation of oaths located in the west of the Teyvat continent.
Following the guidance of the flame's light, crossing long gorges and valleys, the place where that brilliant torch burns fiercely is also where all fires become one. On this blazing plain where dragons roam, witness the end of the ancient war alongside the warriors resisting the darkness.
- Cryo——Nordkalaj
- The land of moon's blessing located in the northwest of the Teyvat continent.
Following the silver thread spun by the crescent moon, crossing the biting cold winds and the bleak tundra, the frost-colored radiance of eternity is reflected in the lake like a broken mirror. The days are short, yet in the long nights, the light and song of the Welkin Moon will always gently brush across the traveler's face. Light the lamps upon the high towers, until the day when the true moonlight shines upon this land.[3]

Khaenri'ah
Khaenri'ah is located underground; it does not belong to the seven nations ruled by the gods of Teyvat and is an ancient nation without a god. It has no god not because of abandonment or death, but because Khaenri'ah is a civilization belonging to humanity.
Khaenri'ah's technology was extremely advanced. The dangerous machines now scattered across the Teyvat continent, known to people as "Ruin Guards" (called "Field Tillers" by Khaenri'ah), "Ruin Graders," and "Ruin Hunters," are inventions of Khaenri'ah.
Five hundred years ago, Khaenri'ah was destroyed by the gods of Teyvat.
Celestia
Thousands of years ago, the Archon War decided the seven divine seats on Celestia.
Those who possess a "Vision" are known to the world as "allogenes," and they have the potential to ascend to Celestia. The "Gnosis," the magical organ of a god, resonates and connects with Celestia.

- Starting from June 10, 2021, "Honkai Impact 3rd" had a one-way collaboration with "Genshin Impact." There are seven elements in the game, namelyFire、Hydro、Wind、Thunder、hilarious、Ice、Geo. Each element produces different effects; the elements also interact with each other to trigger various Elemental Reactions.
Level

In the game, every player has two levels: "Adventure Rank" and "World Level".
Adventure Rank represents a player's activity experience and level of mastery in the game. When the Adventure Rank reaches a certain level, the World Level will increase automatically or after completing the corresponding Adventure Rank Ascension Quest. The World Level mainly affects the difficulty of the open world, the quality of drops, and sometimes the upper limit of character development. Players can raise their Adventure Rank to a maximum of 60 and their World Level to 9. After the Version 1.4 update, once the Adventure Rank reaches 60, overflowing Adventure EXP is converted into Mora at a certain ratio. After the Version 5.0 update, the World Level cap was increased from 8 to 9.
Players also have a Reputation Level in the game. Players can obtain Reputation EXP to increase their level by completing Bounties, Requests, World Exploration, and regional Quests. Each nation has its own exclusive Reputation quests and rewards.
Domains and Bosses

Domains are instances, categorized into Domains of Forgery, Domains of Blessing, Domains of Mastery, Trounce Domains, etc. Rewards can be collected upon completing a Domain, and the rewards vary depending on the type of Domain. Except for certain challenge Domains, all other Domains require Resin to collect rewards. Domain entrances also function as Teleport Waypoints.
In addition to Domains, players can also take on Ley Line Outcrop challenges or directly hunt various monsters while exploring Teyvat. Defeating common and elite enemies will drop materials. There are also Bosses in the open world; players can enter a Boss's arena and approach them to start the fight, or leave the battlefield at any time to abort it. Defeating a Boss allows for reward collection. The level of open-world Bosses is determined by the player's World Level; players cannot choose the challenge difficulty or the associated drop rewards.
Collecting rewards from Domains and Bosses requires "Original Resin" and "Fragile Resin". "Original Resin" can be used to activate "Petrified Trees" deep within Domains, as well as various "Ley Line Blossoms" in the world, to obtain rewards. Consumed Original Resin gradually regenerates over time up to its cap, and can also be replenished by consuming Primogems or "Fragile Resin".
Some players, referring to similar mechanisms in other games, are accustomed to calling "Original Resin" "Stamina". Please do not confuse it withStamina systemto be confused with.

The open world is designed with various resources for players to collect, and the resources available for collection vary by region. When players reach Adventure Rank 14, they can commission other characters to collect certain resources through Expeditions.
At a "Crafting Bench," three low-level materials of the same type can be synthesized into one high-level material, or materials of the same type can be converted into each other, or items such as "Original Resin" and various potions can be synthesized.
Statues of the Seven and Teleport Waypoints
- Statue of the Seven
"Statues of the Seven" are divided intoFire、Hydro、Wind、Thunder、hilarious、Ice[Note 4]、Geoseven elemental types, with several Statues of the Seven for each elemental type scattered across different areas of the corresponding elemental region. Activating a Statue of the Seven lights up the map of the corresponding area. When the Traveler activates a Statue of the Seven of a certain elemental type for the first time and chooses to resonate with that element, they will obtain the talents and Constellations of the corresponding elemental attribute[Note 5]. By resonating with statues of different elemental attributes, the Traveler can switch their own elemental attribute. Interacting with a statue allows players to view and restore the HP of characters in the current party and storage, and change restoration settings.
When a character enters the interaction range of a Statue of the Seven, the stored restoration power of the statue can be consumed to replenish the character's HP. The stored restoration power is shared among statues, and the total storage limit increases with the number of statues unlocked by the player. When the restoration power has not reached the total storage limit, it will be replenished over time, recovering 1% of the current total storage limit every 15s. The timer will not be interrupted when the player opens the Paimon menu, reconnects to the server, or logs back in immediately after exiting the game. Each statue has 5,000 points of restoration power. As of version 5.2, there are 47 Statues of the Seven in total, with a total storage limit of 235,000 points of restoration power. Entering the interaction range of the Statue of the Seven in Dragonspine can remove the Sheer Cold status for the current character.
Statues of The Seven have a teleportation function, and players can select a Statue of The Seven on the map to teleport characters.
Additional maps (Enkanomiya[Note 6]etc.), and time-limited areas (Golden Apple Archipelago, etc.) do not have Statues of The Seven.

- Teleport Waypoint
The destination of teleportation, which can be used once activated and remains effective permanently. Some waypoints are automatically activated upon meeting unlock requirements. Players select a Teleport Waypoint on the map to teleport characters.
When a player enters the interaction range of a Teleport Waypoint in Dragonspine, the character's Sheer Cold will be removed.
In certain scenarios, Teleport Waypoints are forcibly disabled. For instance, in Noctua Chapter: Act I "Darknight Hero's Alibi," Teleport Waypoints cannot be used upon returning to "Angel's Share" in Mondstadt; in the World Quest "Through the Mists," Teleport Waypoints are obscured by thick fog and cannot be used; during the Version 2.5 event "Three Realms Gateway Offering," Teleport Waypoints are sealed by dark fog and cannot be used.
Using "Portable Waypoint" allows for the placement of at most one temporary waypoint at any location in the open world, which lasts for one week.
Adventure Collection

Genshin Impact features a collection system. By collecting specific items in the open world and offering them at designated locations to increase the level of corresponding facilities, players can claim milestone rewards. For example,Oculi, when the number of offered Oculi reaches a certain amount, the Statue of The Seven of the corresponding element will level up, and each level-up increases the player's maximum Stamina[Note 7]。
Time Adjustment
One day and night (24 hours) in-game corresponds to 24 minutes in reality. After opening the Paimon Menu, click the clock dial icon on the far left to view the current time in the game world; by dragging the dial pointer (each full rotation represents one day), the time can be adjusted to a moment starting from 30 minutes later,within 48 hours(Note)before Version 2.2, the maximum fast-forward was 24 hours at a timeat a specified moment.
- This feature is particularly important for certain quests that can only proceed at specific times.
- Some mechanisms (refreshing of materials, Daily Commissions, Spiral Abyss, etc., sequential triggering of certain quest series, etc.) depend on real-world time and are not controlled by Paimon's clock.
Special Environments

In certain areas of the open world, special environments may appear that affect player exploration. Players should avoid these areas or prepare for the environment to prevent characters from falling.
Wish
- Main article:Wish
This refers to the gacha system. Wishes in Genshin Impact are divided into five types: Wanderlust Invocation, Beginners' Wish, Character Event Wish, Weapon Event Wish, and Chronicled Wish (the latter three are collectively known as Event Wishes). Players can obtain characters and weapons through Wishes. The items required for Wishing (Intertwined Fate or Acquaint Fate) can be obtained through Primogem exchange, Masterless Starglitter and Masterless Stardust exchange, completing Adventure Rank Ascension Quests, and other methods.
Blessing of the Welkin Moon and Battle Pass

Blessing of the Welkin Moon is commonly known as the "Small Monthly Card." Upon purchase, you immediately receive 300 Genesis Crystals, and for 30 days, you receive 90 Primogems upon your first login each day. Prices vary by server; in the China server, one Blessing of the Welkin Moon costs 30 Yuan.
Players can open the Battle Pass from the top right of the main game interface or the Paimon Menu. It is Genshin Impact'sBattle Passsystem. Rewards are obtained by accumulating Battle Pass EP through completing designated missions. Purchasing the upgrade provides more abundant rewards, commonly known as the "Big Monthly Card."
Co-op Mode

After players reach Adventure Rank 16, the Co-op Mode will be unlocked. Since everyone has an independent world (game save data, including data related to the Serenitea Pot), Genshin Impact's co-op game mode is a "single-player hosts, others join" system. When matching for Domain challenges, one player will be randomly selected as the host.

Serenitea Pot

Added in Version 1.5, it is the housing system of "Genshin Impact". After completing the Archon Quest Chapter I: Act III "A New Star Approaches", the "Serenitea Pot" gadget can be obtained through the World Quest "A Teapot to Call Home: Part I", and it is unlocked after entering the Serenitea Pot for the first time.

Added in Version 2.1. After opening the "Serenitea Pot" system, it is unlocked upon completing the World Quest "Exploding Population". Players can talk to designated NPCs to exchange the fish they catch for fishing rods, weapons, and other items.
Genius Invokation TCG

Added in Version 3.3, it is a permanent card game gameplay system in "Genshin Impact". After reaching Adventure Rank 32 and completing the Archon Quest "Song of the Dragon and Freedom", it can be unlocked through the World Quest "Battlefield of Dice, Cats, and Cards".
Thousand-Sound Gathering
Added in Version 5.3, it is a permanent rhythm game activity in "Genshin Impact". After reaching Adventure Rank 35 and completing the Archon Quest "Song of the Dragon and Freedom", it can be unlocked through the World Quest "To the Wind of Freedom".
Leisurely Travelogue
Introduced as a limited-time event in Versions 5.4 and 5.7, and became permanent in Version 6.0 (Month One).

Genshin Impact PROJECT
Manga"Genshin Impact PROJECT", began serialization on August 3, 2018, onDMZJplatforms, and concluded on April 17, 2020. This manga version serves as an early prototype for the Genshin Impact script.
The manga tells two stories of Mondstadt's past. The first story follows Vennessa, guided by the bard Venti, as she liberates the people from aristocratic rule; the second story concerns the "Fatui" Black Fire incident that occurred in Mondstadt shortly before the start of the main storyline.

On the review aggregator website Metacritic, game media reviews for "Genshin Impact" are generally positive.[6]IGN editor Travis Northup believes that "Genshin Impact" draws inspiration from "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" but is not a poor imitation; the world of Teyvat in "Genshin Impact" is "filled with infinite possibilities," the game's tutorial design is excellent, and the exploration gameplay is "addictive." Although player progression slows down in the late game and requires more time, the game achieves a balance between monetization and grinding.[13]GameSpot editor Heidi Kemps believes that Genshin Impact's elemental reaction design is unique and interesting; although the game does not force players to spend money, the gameplay is still limited by the free-to-play model.[11]

On July 25, 2024, the SAG-AFTRA association, to which most Genshin Impact English voice actors belong, began a strike[25]. Starting from version 5.1, a large amount of English story voiceovers began to be missing. Initially, players thought that the relevant voice actors had encountered large-scale scandals, but after verification, it was found that the union to which the voice actors with missing voiceovers belonged had launched a large-scale strike to boycott AI voice acting, and all voice actors had to stop their voice acting work[26]，《Honkai: Star Rail》《Zenless Zone Zero》 and other games have lost a large amount of story voiceovers due to this. As a game with high topicality in the English community, "Genshin Impact" bore the brunt of this incident and had the highest level of discussion. However, in the draft agreement released by the union to "support the return to voice acting work,"[27], there appeared many suspected monopolistic and overbearing clauses such as "prohibiting non-union members from voicing HoYoverse games," "paying protection fees," "forcing non-union members to join," and "not interfering with community opinions." Meanwhile, HoYoverse's protection regarding the AI usage of voice actors' voices already hasas a very mature precedent, therefore, voices supporting HoYoverse not signing this agreement have appeared in both Chinese and English communities. Currently, the lack of English voice acting is still ongoing. On March 26, 2025, with the Version 5.5 update,Kinich's voice actor was changed fromJohn PatneaudetoJacob Takanashi, which is also the first time Genshin Impact has replaced a voice actor since the English voice acting strike. Afterwards,Paimon's English voice acting was also replaced in Version 5.7. Prior to this, "Honkai: Star Rail》《Zenless Zone Zero" had already gradually begun replacing voice actors or using non-SAG-AFTRA union voice actors. |
